Education, Training and Salary A degree is not required for most store manager positions However, large retail chains prefer to hire managers with a college degree in management or business Also must go through a managerial training program The average assistant manager earns $31,466 to $41,900 a year

  4. Abilities and Personal Qualities Must have strong leadership skills and enjoy working with people. Must be okay with being on your feet most of the time. Must pay attention to detail and have strong listening skills.

  5. Job Availability and Location Jobs as an assistant store manager can be found in just about any location. There is a larger variety however, in big cities such as San Francisco, LA, or New York.
