Introduction Although the three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas, not all substances seem to fit perfectly into one of these groups. Take a look at shaving cream and see if you can decide whether it should be called a solid, liquid, gas, or something in between.
Materials Needed • Shaving cream • Small plate • Penny • Magnifying glass • Paper towels

Procedure • Set up your science journal with a I Notice/I Wonder T Chart • Squirt some shaving cream onto your plate and observe it. • Examine it with a magnifying lens. • Form a hypothesis: Is shaving cream a solid, liquid or gas? • Draw what you see in your science journal • Try blowing gently on the shaving cream. • Try rubbing some between your fingers. • Do you still agree with your hypothesis? • Record your thoughts……
Let’s finish… • Carefully place a penny on top of the shaving cream and observe what happens. • Draw your observations. • Now fill in your “I Notice/I Wonder” Chart. • Leave the shaving cream overnight and observe again in the morning.
