Round 1--Invention • Read the speech. Can you establish… • Persona? • Tone? • Intent? (the lesson is to _______________) • Question the speech. Where do they need to… • Add details? Delete details? Explain something? Address the lesson more effectively? Clarify? • Evaluate the invention. How/where did they use… • Ethos, pathos, logos FOR EFFECT! (Does this match the tone?)
Round 2--Arrangement • Read the speech. Can you establish… • Tone? Persona? Underline words/phrases that show this. • Look at arrangement/organization. • Highlight the thesis. Is it accurate and clear? • Read just the intro and conclusion. Are they circular and insightful? • Count the body paragraphs. Too many? Not enough? • Highlight transitions. Are more needed? Where? Put stars where transitions are needed (words, sentences, para, etc.)
Round 3--Style • Read the speech. • Circle diction you LIKE • Box diction that could be: more specific, more accurate, more descriptive, more explanatory • Underline the use of rhetorical devices (see the list) • Star places where he/she could other rhetorical devices
