Fluxgate Magnetometer (FGM) Instrument Status Rumi Nakamura, Werner Magnes Institut fuer Weltraumforschung (IWF) Austrian Academy of Sciences Hans-Ulrich Auster Institut fuer Geophysik und Meteorologie Technical University Braunschweig (TU-BS)
FGM Overview • Status F1..F6 • 3 ETU’s available for tests • F4 & F6 test and calibration completed • F1, F2, F3, F5 manufacturing completed, test and calibration finished in February 2005 • Compliance with MRD requirements • See FGM-3 …FGM-6 • Test schedule • See FGM -7
Dependency on electronics temp. without feedback 0.01nT/°C ! with feedback 0.1nT/°C ? acceptable, but could be improved by replacing AD648 by LT1013 MRD requirements • The absolute stability of the FGM shall be less than 1nT Dependency on sensor temp. <0.01nT/°C ! temperature
MRD requirements • The relative stability of the FGM shall be less than 0.2nT/12hrs Measurement of horizontal Earth field by F4 and F6. Over 15 hours no significant difference visible
MRD requirements • The FGM noise level @ 1Hz shall be less than 0.03nT/Sqrt(Hz) 0.03nT/Sqrt(Hz) 0.01nT/Sqrt(Hz)
MRD requirements • The FGM digital resolution shall be less than 0.1nT • The FGM science range shall exceed 0-1000nT Test shows Earth field variation with a resolution better 0.1nT @ a back ground field of 12000nT 1nT
FGM Test Schedule • December 2004 • exchange of AD648 by LT1013 (all boards) • start F1 & F2 test in Europe • January 2005 • repetition of electronics temperature test F4 & F6 in Berkeley • finish F1 & F2 test in Europe • February 2005 • start F3 & F5 test in Europe • finish F3 & F5 test in Europe
