Sociological Theory The “big three”
Sociological Theories Macro-level • Functionalism (Structural Functionalism) • Conflict theory • Feminist theory Micro-level • Symbolic Interactionism
Functionalism • Components of society serve a purpose or function • Things that have no purpose will disappear over time • Things work best when all agree to the rules of society and there is consensus • Change is difficult; it upsets the balance
Somewhat associated with evolutionary theory • Macro-level theory • Max Weber, Herbert Spencer and others
Some functions are intended and recognized = Manifest Functions • Some functions are unintended, unplanned, side-effects = Latent Functions • Some functions have negative consequences (might be manifest or latent) = Dysfunctions
Conflict Theory • Social life is a struggle for power • Haves versus Have-nots • Change is to be desired • Change levels the power – at least for a time • Macro-level theory • Karl Marx
Feminism • a conflict theory and theoretical perspective which observes gender in its relation to power • Focused on gender: one’s sense of being masculine or feminine • Interrogates patriarchy: the system of male domination of women
Early Feminist Theorists • Harriet Martineau and Jane Addams
Symbolic Interactionism • Focuses on the meanings assigned by groups in society • Communication is possible because of shared symbols • Symbols change as society changes • Symbols also provide stability during times of rapid or unpredictable change • Micro-level theory
Interactionists at the University of Chicago are sometimes called the “Chicago School” • George Herbert Mead (I and me) • Charles Horton Cooley (looking-glass self)
Using theory to study a social event: a funeral • Functionalists -- what purposes does it serve? • Conflict – how are competition and power a part of the issue? • Interactionists – what is symbolic and how are the symbols understood as meaningful?
C. Wright Mills • Wrote that the sociologist’s main task is to identify and explain the connection between people’s personal troubles and the social structures in which they are embedded. • Coined the term “sociological imagination”

I was the first professor of sociology. 5. I was one of the first feminist sociologists
