Introduction for Myanmar Tourism Industry • Location-South East Asia • Total land area-677,000 sqkm (261,228 sq miles) • Borders – India, Bangladesh, China, Laos, Thailand, Andaman Sea, Bay of Bengal. • Total length of coastline: 2216 kms (1385 miles) • Climate: Tropical Tourism friendly climate
Major River System • Ayeyarwady-2170km(1350miles) with navigable distances: 1500 km (930 miles) • Chindwin-Approximately (600) miles with navigable distance 180 km (110 miles) in dry season, 610 km (380 miles) during the monsoon) • Thanlwin (Salween)- 2816 kilometers (1749 miles) with navigable distance 160 km (100 miles) • Mekong River is very important river for Myanmar and Laos because of it was flow along the border line between the two countries.
Basic Legislation Framework of Tourism Industry in Myanmar • Ministry of Hotels & Tourism was formed in 1993. • Myanmar Hotels & Tourism Law was promulgated in 1993. DHT under the Ministry of Hotels & Tourism is responsible to provide trainings and conduct courses to improve the quality; raise the standard of hotel and tourism industry; and to disseminate systematically technical knowledge relating to tourism. • DHT cooperates with local and regional organizations towards tourism capacity building.
Aims • This regional workshop aims to discuss the situation of Vocational training in the tourism sector and more particularly in the hospitality industry and elaborate possible solutions to address the lack of qualified staff that is key to providing good services to all target markets and spread the qualitative image of the destination.
Scope of Presentation • Situation of Vocational training; private / public schools • Identification of needs for staff qualitative (what skills, where) and quantitative • Existing programs (process to elaborate curriculum, national one or ad Hoc?) and resources, accreditation schemes; • Possible strategies what needs to be improved in particular to target SMEs and poor people • Role of the private sector • Institutional, structural ad financial mechanisms • what are the areas of cooperation with neighboring countries
Overview of Tourism HRD • School of Tourism Training (STT) • Hotels and Tourism Training Centre (HTTC) • The Mandalay Hotels and Tourism Training Centre (MHTTC) • National Management College (NMC) (Diploma in Tourism Study and Management)
School of Tourism Training(STT) • (formerly TGTS) Tourist Guide Training School established by the Myanmar Hotels & Tourism Services under the authority of Ministry of Hotels & Tourism. • conducted the first tourist guide course in 1992. • To date, 38 tourist guide courses + (46) Tourism Management and other courses.
VISION of STT • To train competence in the tourism services. • To acquire knowledge and understanding on principles and practices of the tourism business and industry. • To enhance skillful professionals for systematic development of hotel and tourism industry. • To upgrade the present status to Tourism Institute.
Tourism Course Contents • Competency and presentation skills of tourism resources • Knowledge of related tourism departments for the facilitation of travel within the country • Management skills for tourism industry • Awareness of tourism out comes esp. within GMS and ASEAN and neighboring India and China , etc. and global trends.
Resource Persons • Principal + Teaching staff of STT • Teaching Resource Persons from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism (rules and regulations etc.) • Tourism related Ministries / Departments (customs, immigration, culture, social welfare, police force etc.)
Certification / Licensing • Certified by the Directorate of Hotels and Tourism. • License Test for Tour Guide.
Objectives of HTTC (Yangon) • To train for development of competency of (4) hotel divisions of labour • To upgrade skills of the divisions of labour • To contribute to productivity, officency and development of hotel and industry vis as vis tourism. • To disseminate best practices. • To upgrade to Hotel Institute.

Hotel Course Contents • Competency Based Trainings with the available resources • Upgrading of national standards to the minimum regional competency standards • Follow the best practices of the GMS /ASEAN region
RESOURCES The library, which is available for use by all course participants, consists of technical books on hotel and tourism, books on history, culture, arts, architecture, Buddhism and product knowledge of Myanmar, and discipline wise training films and slides. For language studies, there are books on French, English and Myanmar languages. The training center also has a language laboratory to give opportunities for trainees to practice their language skills. There are 16 booths in the laboratory and each booth has a cassette and a headset for a student to practice separately or being monitored by language instructor. Objectives • To develop tourism HR at post-graduate level • To contribute tourism knowledge for sustainable tourism development • To upgrade to Fulltime Course • To establish Tourism College, University, Institute
DSTM Course Contents • To increase knowledge of tourism and awareness of the impacts of tourism • To understand development and management of tourism with success models • To create awareness of the regional, global trends in tourism and the sustainability • To have knowledge of the GMS Millennium Development Goals and make assessments • To develop interest for case studies on the impact of tourism on the communities and formulate model strategies.
Tourism Study and Management • DTSM initiated under the joint cooperation of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Hotels and Tourism • Orientation Courses ( Training to the Trainers ) at Yangon University from March 2004 to March 2005 • 30 trainers from Yangon University and Yangon Institute of Economics professors, lecturers, tutors from Post- graduate course • Two semesters, Part Time

Possible Strategies to target SMEs and poor people • To propose train the trainers programmes within GMS • To prioritise HRD within GMS • to organize trainings and workshops in the secondary destinations with existing available resources. • To mobilize more trainers from available sources • To encourage private sector participation in involving the local people with basic training in tourism related services.

Conclusion This subregional workshop aims to bring together key stakeholders (tourism responsible authorities, stakeholders as well as those from education sectors, private sector, representatives of international organizations and donor countries and agencies ADB, WB/IFC, AFD, GTZ and SNV. This regional workshop aims to discuss the situation of Vocational training in the tourism sector and more particularly in the hospitality industry and elaborate possible solutions to address the lack of qualified staff that is key to providing good services to all target markets and spread the qualitative image of the destination.
