Features of a Medieval Manor • Manors were self sufficient • Everything they needed to survive could be found on the manor • There was limited trade and little money exchanged • A typical manor included • A manor house or castle • Noble’s homes • A church • Farm land • Mills • Other workmen’s area • With feudal warfare so common, Manors needed to be designed to withstand attack
Features of a Medieval Castle • The castle did not only hold the royals or lords, but it also served as the primary housing for the military • They were built to defend attack, but also for design and wealth • The main features include: • Outer defenses • Moat • Walls/Towers (inner and outer) • Inner defenses • Baileys or wards • Living quarters and support buildings • Keeps and dungeons • Great hall • Chapels • Workshops
Your Task • You have been appointed a Lord and given a large fief by your king • You are to build a manor on your land, and may rule it as you see fit • You are to do the following: • Create a drawing or layout of your manor • Generate a key where you explain what each feature is and its purpose on the manor • Compose a draft government or a list of rules for your manor • How will you rule? • What will be required of your people? • This assignment will count as a quiz grade, and will be graded on creativity, neatness, and accuracy
