Why was it written? • Delegates from the 13 colonies started to list a series of complaints against the King of England • The colonists were beginning to have their freedoms limited by the King • In June of 1776, the Second Continental Congress decided to create a document to declare independence from England
Who wrote the document? • There were five men given the task • Thomas Jefferson was given the task of writing the document • It was written in 17 days and was given to Congress on June 28 • It was approved on July 4, 1776
