Effective Writing Habits: Ask Dear Professor Jones, I am a student in your ENG2001 course, and I had a question about our upcoming paper assignment. You asked use to use sources from the syllabus in the draft, and I was wondering how many would be appropriate to use? Dear Professor Smith, I wasn’t sure what this week’s assignment meant by “analyze Twain’s use of water.” Did you mean we should perform a close reading? Compare Twain’s text to other contemporary texts? Something else? I’m getting started and would love some clarification! Dear Writing Center, I am getting started on my first paper at Walden and would like some feedback on its organization and on my use of APA. I am new to APA so if you could focus on the biggest issues and leave the smaller ones for my next review I would appreciate it. Do you think my paper’s organization makes sense?
Effective Writing Habits: Fix Reading your work aloud to yourself is a great way to catch any mistakes you may have missed—especially if you’ve read your draft multiple times!
Effective Writing Habits: Fix Be sure you know how to view Writing Center and instructor feedback!
Maximizing Your Potential: Speak Up! Successful students know when to ask for help, when to ask for advice, and how to find resources on their own. You are the person who cares the most about your writing education—so take ownership!
Maximizing Your Potential: Speak Up! • Professor made an APA mistake? • Check the APA manual, then email politely and cite the relevant passage. • Assignment unclear? • Email the Writing Center with your assignment, or email your professor directly. • Don’t understand why you got the grade you did? • Ask for more feedback and how to improve on the next assignment.
Maximizing Your Potential: Look Ahead • Don’t just focus on your current assignment. Ask yourself: • How does this help me master this course’s materials? • How can I apply this knowledge in my current job? • How can I apply this knowledge in my future courses?
Maximizing Your Potential: Take Stock Successful academic writers don’t write in a void—they are constantly evaluating where they are contributing ideas, which ideas they might engage with next, and whether there are areas of improvement for their writing.
Maximizing Your Potential: Set Goals Static goals are nonspecific, and achieving them may be outside your control. Growth goals are specific and measurable, and you have control over whether they are achieved.
