  1. Mitosis How eukaryotic cells reproduce

  2. Interphase • Before mitosis • The cell grows and copies its organelles and DNA (chromosomes) • After chromosomes are duplicated, copies are called chromatids and are held together at the centromere

  3. Interphase

  4. Prophase • During mitosis • Chromosomes condense into straight lines

  5. Prophase

  6. Metaphase • Nuclear membrane dissolves • Paired chromatids line up in the middle of the cell

  7. Metaphase

  8. Anaphase • Chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell

  9. Anaphase

  10. Telophase • Nuclear membrane reforms around the new sets of chromosomes • Chromosomes unwind

  11. Telophase

  12. Cytokinesis • After mitosis • The cytoplasm splits in two • In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches • In plant cells, a cell plate forms • The cell cycle in complete. These two new cells are identical to each other and the original cell, and they are at the beginning of their cell cycle.

  13. Cytokinesis

  14. Mitosis Video

  15. Quiz • Which of the following is the correct definition of mitosis? • How prokaryotic cells reproduce • How eukaryotic cells reproduce • How all cells reproduce • How people reproduce

  16. Quiz 2. Which of the following is not true for cytokinesis? • It happens after mitosis • The cytoplasm splits in two • The cell cycle is complete • The two new cells are different from each other and the original cell

  17. Quiz 3. Which phase of mitosis does this picture represent? • Prophase • Anaphase • Metaphase • Telophase

  18. Quiz 4. Which phase of the mitosis does this picture represent? • Prophase • Anaphase • Metaphase • Telophase

  19. Quiz 5. Which of the following happens during Anaphase? • Chromosomes condense into straight lines • The nuclear membrane dissolves • Chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell • The nuclear membrane reforms

  20. Quiz • Which of the following is the correct definition of mitosis? b. How eukaryotic cells reproduce

  21. Quiz 2. Which of the following is not true for cytokinesis? d. The two new cells are different from each other and the original cell

  22. Quiz 3. Which phase of mitosis does this picture represent? • Prophase

  23. Quiz 4. Which phase of the mitosis does this picture represent? c. Metaphase

  24. Quiz 5. Which of the following happens during Anaphase? c. Chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell
