Mitosis How eukaryotic cells reproduce
Interphase • Before mitosis • The cell grows and copies its organelles and DNA (chromosomes) • After chromosomes are duplicated, copies are called chromatids and are held together at the centromere
Prophase • During mitosis • Chromosomes condense into straight lines
Metaphase • Nuclear membrane dissolves • Paired chromatids line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase • Chromatids separate and move to opposite sides of the cell
Telophase • Nuclear membrane reforms around the new sets of chromosomes • Chromosomes unwind
Cytokinesis • After mitosis • The cytoplasm splits in two • In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches • In plant cells, a cell plate forms • The cell cycle in complete. These two new cells are identical to each other and the original cell, and they are at the beginning of their cell cycle.
