Ofsted Subsidiary Guidance – pages 48 to 49, Sept 2013 • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction • Contribute to school SEF and understand its strengths and weaknesses including impact of own work • Support and strengthen school leadership including developing own skills • Provide challenge and hold SLT to account for improving standards including use of data • Use performance management systems to improve teaching and learning • Ensure solvency and probity and financial resources are well managed • Ensure statutory duties are met • Engage with key stakeholders • Use of pupil premium to overcome barriers

Questions that DfE are currently looking at: • What is the most advantageous scale for school-level accountability? • Are there benefits when governance is organised at a multi-school level? • How do effective governing bodies use target setting, data analysis and headteacher reporting to create robust accountability for school performance? • What defines the boundary between the strategic role of the governing body and the headteachers’ responsibility for the day to day operation and management of the school? • How can governors avoid getting distracted from their core strategic functions? •   What limits the effectiveness of governing bodies? • Where governance has improved significantly, how has that been achieved?
