  2. The Egg • In March and April eggs are laid on milkweed plants. • Progressing from egg to an adult monarch butterfly takes about a month depending on the temperature. • The egg is about the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

  3. The Caterpillar • The next step in the life cycle is the caterpillar. Once the egg hatches it becomes a baby caterpillar. • After two weeks the caterpillar is fully grown and finds a place to attach itself so that it can start the process of metamorphosis.

  4. The Chrysalis • The next step in the cycle is that the caterpillar will attach itself to a stem using silk and it will transform into a chrysalis • The pupa turns into a jade color with gold markings. • The monarch wings are folded into the chrysalis while growing into an adult butterfly.

  5. The Adult Butterfly • Ten days into chrysalis they shed their outer skin, and become an adult butterfly. • The monarch butterflies pump their wings using fluid that is stored in their abdomen. • After 2-5 weeks monarch butterflies start reproducing and laying eggs.
