  2. What is the FCAT 2.0? • The purpose of this statewide assessment is to gather information about students and provide information about student mastery of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS).

  3. What is measured? • The FCAT 2.0 measures student knowledge and understanding of reading, writing, science, and mathematics content as described in the Sunshine State Standards. There is a direct connection between the NGSSS and the questions on the FCAT 2.0.

  4. Dates for FCAT Testing 4th Grade FCAT Writes Test Tuesday, February 28 45 minutes All students will receive the same prompt.

FCAT Dates to Remember: Day 1 - Monday, April 16 • 3rd – Reading – Session 1 - 70 minutes • 4th – Reading – Session 1 - 70 minutes • 5th – Reading - Session 1 - 70 minutes Day 2 - Tuesday, April 17 • 3rd – Reading – Session 2 - 70 minutes • 4th – Reading – Session 2 - 70 minutes • 5th – Reading – Session 2 - 70 minutes

SAT – 10 (NRT) Normed-Referenced Test Thursday, April 26 • This test is used to compare individual student scores against national scores. • Grades 3-5 will take the Reading and Math sessions of the test on this day with a break. • Total testing time is between 105-150 minutes on this day. What’s New for 2012 FCAT 2.0 • On December 19th 2011, new scales and achievement level cut scores were adopted by the Florida Board of Education. • Cut scores will impact current 4th and 5th grade students who will take FCAT 2.0 Reading and Math in April 2012. • Student achievement may not necessarily have changed…but the ruler sure has!

  10. 2011+Achievement Levels FCAT Reading vs. FCAT 2.0 Achievement Levels 2010 Achievement Levels • Scale score range from 100 to 500 • Large range within achievement levels (Gr3 level 1: 100-258 = 158-point range) • All levels based on same scale (100-500 for grades 3-10) • Developmental scale score range differs by grade level • Small range within achievement levels (Gr3 level 1: 140-181; 41-point range) • All levels based on different scale at each grade level

FCAT 2.0 Reading 3rd Grade Promotion • Third grade students must attain a minimum score of 182 (Level 2) in order to be promoted to 4th Grade. • While this seems like a lower overall number, the scale is narrower. The band within Level 2 is only 15 developmental scale score points. (182-197) • In past years, the scale was from 100-500 (Range of 400 scale points). • The current scale for 3rd grade is 140-260 (Range of 120 developmental scale score points). • Only third grade students who score at Level 1 are required to be retained if they are not granted a good cause exemption.

  12. What about 4th & 5th Graders? • Take a look at a Level 3 3rd Grader from 2011 – 284-331 point range. (47 point spread) • In 2012 – that same 3rd grader will have a range of 208-220 in order to earn a Level 3 in 4th Grade. (12 point spread) • If it seems as if the rules have changed in the middle of the game – that’s because they have!

  13. What does this mean for Citrus Park Elementary? • 2011 Grade Points: 544 • GRADE “A” (before penalties) • 2011 Grade Points from new scale: 523 • GRADE “B” (before penalties)

  14. What Has Citrus Park Implemented to Prepare for these changes? • 3rd-5th Grade ELP (Extended Learning Program) • 4th Grade “Writing Bootcamp” • FCAT 2.0 Practice Assessments • Reading Form A (Oct.), B (Jan.) & C (in March) • Math FCAT 2.0 Practice form (in March) • Scores reflect new proposed FCAT 2.0 scale • These scores are analyzed by teachers in their PLC’s and our Leadership Team (PSLT) to determine the needs of our students.

  15. Important things you can do… • Ask your child’s teacher to suggest activities for you to do at home with your child. • Meet with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress. • See that your child completes homework assignments. Homework supports classroom instruction.

  16. Important Reminders for Parents • Have you child to school by 8:00 am • Schedule all appointments after noon.

  17. ELECTRONIC DEVICES are Prohibited • Florida Department of Education has stated that if your child is found with ANY electronic device (cell phone, camera, pager, IPOD, PSP, etc…) in his or her pocket or at their desk or within reach during testing, their test will be invalidated!

  18. Testing Accommodations • During the FCAT, students are given testing accommodations based on the following criteria: • ESE Student with Individualized Education Plan • English Language Learner • 504 Plan Students that have testing accommodations that are necessary

Have your child get onto FCAT Explorer as much as you can Talk to your child about what they are doing in school and follow through at home Have your child read every night Be positive about the FCAT, don’t stress them out Be sure that they are well rested and their routine is the same as usual FCAT is just weeks away…what can I do to help my child prepare?

  20. Test Taking Tips • Remind students to read all directions carefully. • Titles of stories and captions are very important- no skipping! • Help your child understand that testing is part of the instructional process, and is something not to fear!
