  2. Table of Contents • Chapter 1: Introduction • Chapter 2: Safety • Chapter 3: Rules • Chapter 4: Fights • Chapter 5: Shooting • Chapter 6: Passing • Chapter 7: Sportsmanship • Glossary

  3. Chapter 1: Introduction I lay on my bed and think to myself, “What to do?” Then, I turn over and see my Detroit, Red Wings poster. “That’s it! I’ll go play some hockey.” While I play hockey with my friends, I think to myself, “What is hockey really all about?” Well, today I’m going to show and tell you all about it.

  4. Chapter 2: SAFETY In hockey, you need equipment. First of all, a helmet is important. Equally important, is a chest pad. Your chest pad goes under your jersey and protects your chest. Elbow pads are critical. Your elbow pads go under the sleeves of your jersey. Hockey players also have to have special pants. These pants go over your underwear and have pads built in them. To protect your knees, you have to wear knee pads, which go under your socks. Lastly, skates or required, so you can move around on the ice.

  5. Chapter 3: Rules In hockey, you have to follow the rules. If you don’t follow the rules, you can get a penalty. A very important rule in hockey, is that you can’t argue with the ref. By arguing with the Ref, you will wind up getting sent to the penalty box. Once you get sent to the penalty box, your team will lose you as a player for two minutes. There's many ways to get sent to the penalty box, especially, high-sticking (hitting somebody with your stick). This is common and will definitely give your team a penalty.

  6. Chapter 4: Fights Getting into fights is common in hockey. Players who fight will usually get sent to the penalty box. In hockey, fights can get very serious. Some players will even lose their teeth during a fight. At times, fights can get so intense, that players will actually get bloody. Also, Refs sometimes make bad calls. One example of this is during a game where the Ref said a player was fighting, although, he was just trying to get his stick from the other player. Actually, getting shoved and checked happens often and won’t get a player sent to the penalty box.

  7. Chapter 5: Shooting It is very important to shoot in hockey. If you shoot often, you can score a goal. Making goals for your team helps to win the game. If you work hard at winning games for your team, you can help them make it to the championship game. Winning the championship game, gets the team the Stanley Cup which, is the trophy and is the highest honor a hockey team can achieve.

  8. Chapter 6: Passing In hockey, passing the puck is important. When you’re not in a good position to make a goal but another player is, always pass the puck to them. By passing the puck to that player, they can make the goal. It’s all about scoring goals and winning games. By winning games, the team can get to the championship game. Everyone hopes to win the championship game and get the Stanley Cup.

  9. Chapter 7: Sportsmanship sportsmanship is stressed as the most important thing in hockey. If somebody on the other team makes a goal, say, “Good job!” By not displaying sportsmanship, the other players, coaches, and refs won’t respect you. If no one respects you, they won’t pass the puck to you. If you don’t get the puck, you can’t make goals. If you don’t make goals, you can’t win games. If you don’t win games, you can’t get to the championship game. If you don’t win the championship game, you can’t win the Stanley Cup. See why it is so critical?

  10. Glossary • Sportsmanship- being nice to other players • Passing- giving the puck to someone else • Shooting- scoring the puck into the net • Ref- the person who enforces the rules • Stanley Cup- the trophy for the championship game
