Introduction • Graeme Orr, Atyrau, April 2011
Contents • VWS - a short introduction • Presentation • Questions
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS) • The world leader in water treatment • water treatment specialist for industry and municipalities • design & build of complete installations • design and implementation of technological solutions • the technology division of Veolia Water • 130 subsidiaries in 57 countries • 9,500 employees • €2.5billion revenue in 2009
VWS Westgarth • Design & Build of turnkey water treatment systems: • Offshore Injection Water • sulphate removal plant (SRP) • Produced Water Treatment • both on and offshore applications • Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) • municipal/industrial applications • V-Care (VWS Westgarth Upstream Services brand) • services, maintenance, spares & monitoring
How the correct selection of after sales service provider can impact process reliability and upstream production Graeme Orr, Atyrau, April 2011
The Situation • Your organisation has just invested a large amount of money on new equipment • Your supplier has just given you the manuals. And gone home, leaving you to operate
Some manuals are better than others But now it needs to work, and repay your investment
So who will now take care of your plant? • This guy? • Good job!
So who will now take care of your plant? • Maybe this one? • With the correct spare parts of course!
The Point • You need to choose your service provider carefully, and do not want to take risks with your expensive new plant
The Solution • The best people to support you in making your plant perform are those that designed and built it • If your supplier cannot do this, is it a wise decision to buy from them? • Ask your purchasing department exactly why they are a little bit cheaper • “The quality of equipment is remembered long after the purchase price is forgotten” • “Expert assistance is much lower cost than repair”
A Typical Service Package • A good supplier should be able to offer a range of services to ensure a productive and reliable plant: • commissioning • operation • upgrades • spares • training • chemicals • data acquisition & review • technical support • Can your supplier offer this? • Why not?

Case Study 1 – South Arne Platform • Oil production platform in the central North Sea • Sulphate removal system designed and built by VWS Westgarth • Commissioning completed May 2002 • Client takes over plant • Performance deteriorates • Client invites VWS Westgarth back under contract to restore performance • V-CareTM contract begins January 2003
Case Study 1 – South Arne Veolia leave Platform V-CareTM put in place • Water injection efficiency improved from 63% to 72% from 2002 to 2003 • Plant availability stable at 99.6% for 2003
Case Study 2 – Platform ‘A’ • Large tension leg platform located offshore Brazil • 280,000BPD sulphate removal plant designed and built by VWS Westgarth • Commissioning completed December 2009 • V-CareTM contract started immediately
Case Study 2 – Platform ‘A’ • The efficiency of the SRU has increased • The volume of water injected reflects the reliability of the system and the improvements carried out
Case Study 3 – Platform ‘B’ • Large tension leg platform located offshore Brazil • 300,000BPD sulphate removal plant designed and built by VWS Westgarth • Commissioning completed November 2008 • No V-CareTM contract • Platform ‘A’ is still in the fabrication yard in the background
Case Study 3 – Platform ‘B’ • Veolia left the platform after commissioning • From this time, the efficiency of the SRU has been reducing and the volume of water injected has been decreasing
Case Study 4 – FPSO • FPSO (Floating Production, Storage & Offloading) facility, located offshore Brazil • 250,000BPD sulphate removal plant designed and built by VWS Westgarth • Commissioned December 2009 • V-CareTM contract begun June 2010
Case Study 4 – FPSO • Since June 2010: VWS Westgarth offshore engineers have been giving training to the operators and supervising the SRU operation • Following VWS Westgarth technical assistance, the overall deviation of water injected against target has decreased from 23.9% to 6.5%
Case Study 4 – FPSO • SRU above benchmark (86.3%) since June 2010 Benchmark
Conclusions • From our own experience in providing V-CareTM support we can conclude that: • complex process plant must be managed carefully to optimise performance, it is not ‘fit and forget’ • the supplier/designer should be able to offer after sales support and has an interest in making sure the plant works well • a strong supplier/owner partnership has mutual benefits • the lowest cost supplier is usually not the best one, when calculating taking whole life cost factors • loss of production is always many times more costly than taking proper care of plant
