Fractions & Percentages We will generate equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents using real-world problems, including problems that involve money. I will explain how knowing my 100 factors can help me with percent.
What are Fractions ? • Parts of a whole • Eg. Numerator Denominator Unit Fractions
Fractions • What do they mean … We have 1 of those parts The whole is split into 2 parts We have 3 of those parts The whole is split into 4 parts
Equivalent Fractions 12 x 2 x 4 x 2 x 4
Reducing Fractions • Cancel • HCF = 3 HCF = 4 • So, ÷ 3 ÷ 4 ÷ 3 ÷ 4
What are Percentages ? • They are just like fractions • The whole is always split into 100 parts • So 35% means 35 out of the 100 parts
Converting between F, D & P • Converting a percentage to a fraction • 40% means 40 out of every 100 • Don’t forget to reduce down, if possible
Converting a fraction to a percentage • You need to find the equivalent fraction which has 100 as the denominator • ___ • 100 x 20 60 So 60% x 20
What if I can’t make my denominator equal to 100? What do you think can you do here? Can 8 = 100?

Finding a Percentage - • 45% of 120 children at the theatre were boys, how many were boys ? • 10% = 12 so 5% = 6 (half of 10%) • So, 40% = 4 x 12 = 48 • and 5% = 6 • 45% = 48 + 6 = 54 boys
