Acute HBV cases in NI - audit of follow up • Dr Ryan Scott • Dr Conall McCaughey (Consultant Virologist)
Acute HBV • Approximately one third of the world's population has serological evidence of past or present infection with HBV • More than 95–99% of adults with acute HBV infection will recover spontaneously and seroconvert to anti-HBs without anti-viral therapy
Standards • All acute HBV cases should have follow up sample sent 6 months after initial diagnosis (unless HBsAg negative before this)
Methods • January 2009 - May 2012 • Acute HBV on basis of core IgM positivity • RVL year files were interrogated - duplicates removed • 61 acute cases identified
Results • Mean age 41.4 years (range 18-74) • Where surname given on initial specimen - (50/54) 92.6% have traditional UK name
Results • Of the 61 acute HBV cases - 11 have no evidence of 6 month follow up specimen • 7 of the 11 originate from primary care
Conclusions • Raises concerns regarding follow up of acute cases • Further audit in progress
