OREGON SUSTAINABILITY ACT: Sustainability means using, developing and protecting resources in a manner that enables people to meet current needs and provides that future generations can also meet future needs, from the multiple perspectives of environmental, economic and community objectives. • PSU VISION STATEMENT: Our vision is to be an internationally recognized urban university known for excellence in student teaching, innovative research, and community engagement that contributes to economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and the quality of life in the Portland region and beyond. • PSU SUSTAINABILITY POLICY: In its role as an educational institution, an employer, a corporate citizen and a property manager, Portland State University recognizes that it has a special responsibility to conduct its activities in an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable manner.
WHAT ABOUT PSU? • PSU spent $3.5-million in 2002 on energy! • PSU uses enough electricity to power 3,500 homes in the Pacific Northwest! • PSU sends 4-million pounds of materials to the landfill • each year! • This is enough to completely fill a line of garbage trucks • nearly a mile long!
WHAT CAN YOU DO? • Turn off the lights after everyone has left a room. • Don’t use space heaters at your desk. • Enable the energy-saver function on your computer. • Set up office equipment so double-sided printing and • copying is the default. • Use chlorine-free, 30% “post-consumer” recycled paper at a minimum.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? • Recycle in the bins provided for you.
