Senior Scheduling and other “must Knows” Class of 2017 – January 2016

Statewide transfer general education core: AKA stgec • This is basically the freshmen year of college’s general education courses. • Students can receive a 30 credit hour Stgec certificate validated by Vincennes University • This Certificate transfers to any public Indiana college/university and some out of state institutions.
Six VU courses required for STGEC • Speech 143 • ENGL 102 – Advanced Research • A fine arts class – either Art Appreciation (ARTT 110), Theatre Appreciation (THEA 100) • SPAN 101 or French 101-HS second year language • SPAN 103 or French 103 – HS third year language • POLS 111 (Govt) or LITR 221 (World Lit) **If you don’t take the language classes, then you must take POLS 111 and LITR 221, and LITR 100 in addition to everything listed above.
Quick Overview of Scheduling Choose 7 courses and a study hall for each semester. (Total 16) College Prep Courses: 4…preferably 5. Choose Alternative Courses Fill out scheduling form with requested 12th grade courses. Input Course Selection into Skyward. Turn in Course Selection Form with appropriate signatures

Skyward You will need to enter your Course Requests for 2016-2017 into Skyward
Once on Skyward you need to click on the “Schedule” tab on the left side of the page.
#2: Once you find the course you want to take click “Add Course”. You will add each course you plan on taking. # 1: You will search for the class you want to take here.
Scheduling forms must be completed online and turned into the Guidance office by January 15, 2016. Incomplete Schedules will be returned to the student for correction. The students counselor will set up individual appointments once a completed schedule is returned. Important Dates
Course selections are final and cannot be changed after May 1, 2016, unless the following exists: Need to meet high school graduation requirements Need to meet college entrance requirements Need to balance over-crowded classes An error in computer entry Late staff changes Requested changes related to teacher assignments, lunch assignments, class periods, etc. will not be considered. If you select a year long course, you are committed to that course for the entire year…you cannot drop at semester. Schedule Changes

Senior Timeline • January 2016: • Make course requests for Senior Year • Schedule Practice SAT/ACT • Schedule the SAT/ACT • Collegeboard.org Your student should do this on his/her account • March 5, 2016 SAT is the new SAT and registration is open
Senior timeline • February 2016 • Research colleges • Look for admissions requirements from GPA, Courses taken and SAT/ACT scores • Look for automatic scholarships • Look for special programming: honors, accommodations, campus visits, camps, etc
Senior Timeline • March-May • Take a detour during Spring Break to visit Colleges • Talk to admissions Counselors • Talk to students • Look around the college town • Take Final exams seriously! • If you found something you need to change in your course request – get it to your counselor by May 1!!
Senior Timeline • Summer 2016 • Make a list of colleges you want to apply for • Start looking at family connection • Think about teachers/administrators who would write a recommendation • Work hard on any summer courses!
Senior timeline • August 2016 • Start applications! • CGHS will send transcripts after labor day • GPA, class rank, transcript cannot be tan until all summer school work is in and uploaded.

College applications process: things to think about • Research, research, research • Senior courses matter – most admissions are conditional based on strong completion of high school senior year. • Each college has unique application conditions. • Re-take the SAT • SAT does Super Score – they take the best score from each section to come up with your score.
This is just one example, but most universities sites are similar • Just google it! • Students should be driving the ship!
