The Truth About Thanksgiving By: Melissa Cox
The Who’s Who was There in 1621 • Tesquantum (Squanto) • Massosoit visited with other Wompanoag American Indians • Massasoit wanted to make the Pilgrims their allies. The picture above represents Tesquantum and the Pilgrims agreement to live together in unity from Thanksgiving Myths
Visual Myths • Often portrayed as Pilgrims feeding Native Americans. • The dress is often exaggerated to show the vast differences in the people. • Pilgrims did not wear the hats children make in school. As pictured above from Thanksgiving Myths, shows the way the first Thanksgiving is often skewed.
What Thanksgiving Actually Was • Tesquantum taught Pilgrims about the annual Fall Harvest Feast. • Three Day long celebration. • Agreed to make it annually. • All food that was eaten was indigenous to America and American Indians showed them how to prepare it.
After Thanksgiving • The next Thanksgiving was not celebrated until after the Piquat war 50 years later. • Celebrated the killing of 700 American Indians. • Race relations went downhill by selling American Indians into slavery. • Pilgrims stole and killed American Indians for food • Possibly due to extended drought at the time • They didn’t have enough food to trade with the Pilgrims. • Pilgrims scalped American Indians. • Pilgrims grave robbed.
Why the Holiday was Created • Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday to: • Set an example that different races can live in harmony. • Unite. • Give hope.
What does the Myth of Thanksgiving Serve? • This demonstrates the myth of superior moral code. • This gives hope that such generosity could happen again. • The myth takes away the American Indians story completely. • We also take away the agency of the Native tribes. • It makes the Native Americans look helpless, weak, and innocent. When in fact they were intelligent, strong, and used the Pilgrims as allies.
