2 Wesley Mission
Wesley Mission Advanced Diploma Music Business students at Hunter Institute develop a song writing workshop as part of their studies. The following year a student from the class is employed as a Youth Worker for Wesley Newcastle Youth Service

Wesley Mission To run a song writing workshop for disadvantaged youth to give them an outlet for self expression. To provide Music students with opportunities to work in the community through teaching song writing workshops and assisting in the performance and recording of the songs

3 Access and Equity Hunter Institute Maitland Campus for Morisset Hospital
Morisset Hospital Access and Equity at Maitland contact the Hunter Institute re conducting classes at Morisset Hospital as a creative outlet and diversion for clients who were about to assimilate back into society.
Morisset Hospital Clients at that time were not interested in the horticulture programs and we discovered there were at least 6 patients who played musical instruments either as previously payed work or as a main interest

Morisset Hospital • Provide a combination of tuition and music therapy • Embed literacy components in song writing classes • Delivery appropriate for beginners and those with some musical ability • Focus toward group activities as opposed to individual • Occupational Therapist assisted teacher

Morisset Hospital • The hospital staff have reported that despite the ongoing challenges that individuals have to manage with mental health, they have been most enthusiastic about their music program each week. • They have produced a CD with 4 individual tracks and 2 group works. • This result should not be undervalued as merely a few tracks in 1 semester. The qualitative outcomes of the patients is measurable in their daily medical reports from staff observation. New Teacher Assigned

Port Stephens To assist disadvantaged students in learning basic PA operations, song writing and performance skills while gaining entry requirements for TAFE Cert 3 Music Courses.

Port Stephens • Subjects tailored to interests of students • Course conducted in cooperation with existing community groups with whom students were already associated • Training utilised in end of year concert

5 Outreach provide a program for Dept of Corrective Services called Pathway to Education & Employment Training. Probation and Parole
Probation and Parole The Music department were asked to provide training that could lead to employment. It was decided to run classes teaching students to set up and run a musical gig.

Probation and Parole To run 6 sessions consisting of industry technical skills, working in a team, OH&S off site and communication & presentation on an industry worksite.

Probation and Parole The clients were enthusiastic and although they have not worked in a related industry area yet, 1 has gained full-time work and the majority have gone onto part-time employment or further TAFE training.
Probation and Parole The Outreach coordinators reported an increase in self esteem in clients and a realisation that there were avenues of hope open to them.
