My book, Esperanza Rising, takes place is the USA and Mexico. The first half is about Esperanza’s life in Mexico. Esperanza is about to become a teenager and she is so excited. From her papa she is getting a very special doll. This is the last present she will ever receive from her father. The day before her birthday, her father is killed. She is devastated. Her uncle, wants to marry her mother. He would not treat them well if her mother did marry him. They decide to go to America. Swiftly and silently in the night. How is this related to my book???
The flag of Mexico looks like this: Colors: The three colors are the colors of The National Liberation Army of Mexico. What’s with the Eagle and the snake??? The people who were first on the land we call Mexico, saw a eagle holding a snake in it’s mouth on a cactus. This story was passed down generations and soon became the symbol of Mexico. Mexico City has a population of 24 million! The city is about the size of our twin cities. Mexico City is one of the most polluted places I have heard of. It is located inside a circle of mountains. This makes the air very smoggy because new air can rarely get in and old air that is polluted and gross, can rarely come out. They say that the air is so polluted that when you breathe it, it’s like smoking 2 packs of cigarettes! The land is sinking because 24 million people use underground wells. These wells get there water obviously from the name, underground. This sucks out the water which causes the ground to sink. It sinks 6-8 inches per year! Pretty soon instead of a city on flat land, it will be a city in a canyon. They have had to add steps to this statue because its sinking Here you can see the smog covering the city. The most popular is as I have mentioned in the flag part, is the Eagle holding the Snake in its Mouth. National Symbols
