Ocean Predators

1. Ocean Predators Created by: Lindsey Applegate

2. Audience 5-6th graders. Middle Class- Suburban Community School. Best for visual type learners. Great for students to improve their memory by matching pictures with words.

3. EnvIronmenT Individual work or 2 people in a group. Use a computer with head phones. Complete activity in a quiet place with minimal to no talking.

4. Objective Students will learn the 3 different types of Ocean Predators; Sharks, Whales and Humans. Students will get a 100% accuracy (10/10) correct using only the PowerPoint. Ocean Predators are all around us. Students will answer questions on each of the Ocean Predators as they are discussed.

10. Information Great White’s tend to hang out around ‘Seal Island’ in False Bay to catch and munch on the seals.

11. Information Sharks love to eat dolphins because of their lean meat. However dolphins are super fast, so if sharks catch one, they are considered lucky.

12. Information Sharks love tiny fish because they are swimming all over the ocean floor. They are also not fast enough to swim away from sharks. When fish swim in ‘schools’ sharks love to chase after them and eat them.

13. Information Sharks eat humans! Especially if they have blood coming from their body. Blood attracts sharks. They can smell blood from up to a mile away. If bleeding, swim fast and get out of the ocean!

14. Information Plankton is basically algae or bacteria. Sharks love munching on this especially since it is the easiest thing to eat and find.

15. Information Interesting Facts About Sharks… -Sharks do not have any bones. -They are made of cartilage. -Sharks have a GREAT sense of smell. -They can swim up to 20-40 mph. -Most sharks can have 6-12 babies at a time.

17. Information Basking Shark Second largest living shark. Found in all the world’s oceans. Slow moving and generally harmless filter feeder.

18. Information Blue Shark Lives in deep waters in the world’s tropical oceans. Can move very quickly. Have large litters of 25; to over 100 pups.

19. Information Great White Shark Biggest shark found in coastal waters in all major ocean. 20 feet in length and weighs up to 5,000 lbs. Movies like “Jaws” are based off of Great Whites.

20. Information Megamouth Shark Rare species of deepwater sharks. A filter feeder like the Basking Shark. Distinctive for its large head and rubbery lips.

21. Information Nurse Shark Gets up to 14 feet and weighs up to 330 lbs. Common inshore, bottom-dwelling shark, tropical oceans. Nocturnal animals.

22. Information Whale Shark Largest Shark ever. Length of 41 feet and weighs up to 79,000 lbs. Found in tropical and warm oceans. Lifespan of about 70 years. Slow-moving filter feeder.

23. Information Wobbegong Shark Found in shallow and temperate tropical waters of the Western Pacific. Can camouflage very well. Pretty harmless, unless people step on them in shallow water; then they will bite.

24. Information Zebra Shark They have stripes on them like a zebra; hence the name. They are nocturnal sharks that attain a length of 8.2 feet.

38. Information Beluga Whale Lives in the Arctic. Gets up to 16 feet in length. Larger than most dolphins but smaller than most toothed whales.

39. Information Blue Whale Loudest animal to live on Earth. They reach up to 105 feet long and weigh up to 200 tons. Shy and placid animals.

40. Information Humpback Whale Known for their magical songs to communicate. Weigh up to 40 tons and grow anywhere from 48-62 feet. Very powerful swimmers, using their tail fin to propel and leap out of the water.

41. Information Orca Whale Commonly known as “killer whales”. Very powerful. Lifespan of 80-90 years. Length of 82-105 feet and weighing up to 200 tons.

46. Information More Americans fish than play basketball and football combined. Humans rely on fish as their daily intake for protein. Most of Asia relies on fishing for their meals 75% of the time.

47. Information Some people fish as their profession. They go out in the open ocean waters to catch crab, lobster, and other high end fish filets for expensive restaurants. It is a good source of income because the job is so dangerous.

48. Information Many vacation areas (California and Florida) have an adventure that’s called “Deep Sea Fishing”. Many people go on these excursions year round to catch fish.
