Biomass, Conversion to Gaseous or Liquid Biofuels By Justin Seager And Lee Ringer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Koenigsegg_CCXR_Edition_(1_von_2).jpg
Main Goal of Biofuels • To find an alternate renewable resource through: Wood Fuel Trash Alcohol Fuels Crops Landfill Gas http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/sources/renewable/images/BIOMASSTYPES1.gif
Making a Difference • Will stop the need for fossil fuels. • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions. • Create a more environmentally friendly way of obtaining energy.` http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,904800,00.jpg http://www.farmenergy.org/images/sg.jpg
How Does It Work? • The materials are gathered into trucks. Then it is transported to a biomass plant. • Here, the waste is fed into furnaces where it is burned. • The heat generated boils the water, which creates steam, which then rotates turbines and generators. http://cdn-write.demandstudios.com/upload//4000/500/50/6/4556.jpg
Obstacles in Biofuel Conversion • “Food vs. Fuel” • Deforestation and soil erosion may appear due to the investment in growing more crops for biofuels. http://intouch-labels.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/corn_field339213037_std.jpg
Obstacles cont’d • The biofuel madness is gathering steam, and it’s not good news for the world’s poor and hungry. Putting one man’s dinner into another man’s car hardly seems like a sensible or ethical way of solving any of the world’s problems.--Graham Young, 2 August 2006 • The largest obstacle is the depletion of land.
