Shelter • Native Americans of the Plains lived in tipis. They were made from buffalo hides. Tipis were sometimes decorated with berry dye. It was the woman’s job to set up and take down the tipis. When they moved to follow the buffalo they carried the tipi on a travois. It took 18 hides to make 1 tipi.
Food They ate buffalo , deer , wolves ,and prairie dogs. They also gathered berries ,nuts ,and seeds. But they mostly relied on the buffalo to get everything they needed.
Clothing • Indians of the plains used buffalo to make their clothing. Women wore dresses , leggings , and moccasins. Men wore eagle feathers, breech clothes, and moccasins.
Important Facts The Plains Indians raided Spanish settlements and stole horses to make hunting the buffalo easier. Sitting Bull was a Plains Indian who refused to give up land to white setters. Sacajawea was an important Plains Indian who helped Lewis and Clark find a water passage to the Pacific Ocean.
