2 Types of Poetry • Lyric- Poetry in which the speaker reveals personal thoughts and feelings • Narrative- Poetry in which the speaker tells a story
Speaker • like the narrator of a story, the speaker of a poem is the voice that communicates with the reader.
Organization • Form- the organizing principle that shapes a poem. • Structure- the poem’s arrangement of words, lines, and images, as well as ideas. • Stanza- A group of lines forming a unit in a poem. The “paragraph” in poetry. • Lines- rows of words that may or may not form sentences • Quatrain- a four-lines stanza • Sestet- A six-line stanza
Rhythm and Meter • Rhythm- the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. A poem’s rhythm may be regular or irregular. • Meter- is the regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables that can establish the rhythm of a poem.
Rhyme • Definition- the repetition of the same stressed cowl sounds and any succeeding sounds in two or more words. • Internal Rhyme- occurs when two words in the same line rhyme. • End Rhyme- occurs at the end of the lines. • Couplet- two successive rhyming lines • Free Verse- poetry that is not written in formal patterns. • Rhyme Scheme- The pattern of rhymes forms by the rhyme at the end of a line of a poem
