  3. Canada’s History • Native Americans inhabited Canada before the European settlers came. They lived in coastal fishing villages or were hunters and gatherers. • First Europeans in Canada were Viking explorers around 1000 a.d. They lived on the Newfoundland coast. • In the 1500s both Britain and France claimed areas of Canada. • The French founded Quebec and Montreal and ruled the area around the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes for almost 230 years. This area was called New France.

  4. Canada’s History cont… • During the 1600 and 1700s France and Britain fought over territory in Canada. Britain won. • Canada became a Britain colony for about 100 years. • A colony is an overseas territory with political and economic ties to the parent country. • In 1867, Canada became a Dominion of England.

Canadian Government • Parliamentary Democracy: Form of government in which voters elect representatives to a lawmaking body. • Prime Minister: head of government in a parliamentary democracy • Canada is considered to be a Dominion of England. In other words, Canada can run their own local affairs but the parent country, England, controls it’s relations with other countries. • The Governor general carries out most of the government’s ceremonial duties.

  8. Fishing • Newfoundland and the Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia) • Grand Banks is the best fishing grounds in the world! • Overfishing has been a major problem and now the government regulates it. • Halifax is a major shipping center in this region.

  10. Manufacturing and Service Industries • Quebec is the largest province in Canada, ¼ of the population live here. • Montreal is an important port on the St. Lawrence. It is Canada’s second largest city and a major financial and industrial center. • Quebec was founded by the French in 1608. • Ontario is the second largest province. It has the most people and the greatest wealth • Ontario produces more than half of Canada’s manufactured goods.

Manufacturing and Service Industries • Southern Ontario has fertile land and a growing season long enough for commercial farming. • Ontario grows grains, fruits, and vegetables and they raise beef and dairy cattle. • Toronto is the capital of Ontario and is Canada’s largest city. It is also the country’s chief manufacturing, financial, and communications center.

  12. Farming and Ranching • Major economic activities in the Prairie Provinces. • Prairie Provinces are: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. • Canada is one of the world’s biggest producers of wheat, which is exported to Europe and Asia.

Languages of Canada • Canada is a bilingual country, it has two official languages: French and English. • Government documents and traffic signs are printed in English and French. • Students learn both languages because the people of Quebec refused to give up their French language and customs. They did not want to “become English.”

Nunavut, a New Territory • The first people of Canada were Native Americans and Inuit. • In 1999, the new territory of Nunavut was created for the Inuit. • Nunavut in Inuit for “our land.” • The Inuit control the government and mineral rights within their borders. They have autonomy, the right to govern themselves unless it involves issues with other nations. • Nunavut is three times the size of Texas.

  16. Nunavut cont… • More than 60% of the population is under the age of 25. • There are not many jobs, only government ones, and they are not enough.
