  1. Mastery of Literary Elements and Skills Students will need to demonstrate MASTERY of specific literary elements and skills during the year

  2. Several of our assignments will give you the opportunity to share your knowledge in a variety of different ways. • Your ability to meet the requirements of the assignments will determine whether or not you have mastered the material.

  3. Once you have met the stated mastery level for a particular element or skill, you will be moving into extending and elaborating on that skill. • Your choices will begin to vary and you will have more control over the assignments.

  4. If you have NOT met the stated mastery level for a particular element or skill, you will be required to revisit and attempt to demonstrate mastery. • Your choices will be limited and you will have less control over the assignments.

  5. For example, you recently completed a technology assignment identifying and explaining the connection between the description of the settings and the characters and events in the text. • Students that have shown mastery of the literary element through their work will be allowed to use one of the next assignment slides as an extension of their knowledge. • Students that have NOT shown mastery will be required to use that slide as an attempt to master the element and skill.

  6. The length of the assignments will remain the same, but the requirements of individual students and their work will be different. • You will need to stay on top of the material we cover and be able to show your complete understanding and application of the elements and skills we cover in class. • Remember that several of your assignments will be uploaded to your Wikispaces page for others to see and evaluate.

  7. Literary Elements and Skills to Master • Setting • Plot & Sequence • Character Traits • Conflict • Symbolism • Foreshadowing • Flashback • Tone & Mood • Figurative Language • Theme & Main Idea

  8. How well did you follow directions and demonstrate mastery of the importance of setting in a text? What problems, challenges, or obstacles did you face while completing the setting assignment? What did you do to address them?

  9. Part 1 – Locate a section of text that describes an important setting from the story. Part 2 – Use taggalaxy.de to locate an image that closely matches the description of the setting. Part 3 - Explain what happens in that setting and what the action reveals about the characters involved.

  10. “The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets and the dark waters of the Liffey.” (page 10) Liam O’ Flaherty creates the mood of story through the use descriptive words and vivid language. The setting is established as a dangerous and challenging place to survive.

  11. You presentation must include the follow pieces/information: • A cover slide with the story title, author’s name, your name, class period, and date • Five (5) completed setting slides • Each slide requires: • A direct quote from the text with the correct page number • An appropriate and fitting image taken ONLY from taggalaxy.de • An explanation (NOT A SUMMARY) of the importance the setting and what is revealed about the character(s). Remember to check the RUBRIC for all the details!
