Definition • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is the means by which members of professional associations maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required in their professional lives. / 27
CPD for medical professionals • CPD consists of any educational activity which helps to maintain, develop or increase knowledge, problem-solving, technical skills or professional performance standards all with the goal that physicians can provide better health care. • CPD includes 'formal' activities, e.g. courses, conferences and workshops, as well as self-directed activities such as preceptorship and directed reading. / 27
Why is CPD important? It’s not your grandmother’s library The nature of information is changing / 27
What is the half life of medical knowledge? • any new information we maygather has a half-life of 5 years. • Lifelong learning is important, but no more important thanclinical judgement, common sense anda critical evaluation of new information. Emanuel E. "A half-life of 5 years" Can Med Assoc J 112:572, 1975 A. J. MACGREGOR. Half-life of medical knowledge. CMA JOURNAL/MAY 17, 1975/VOL. 112 1165 / 27
In 2000 • 285 of 474 conclusions (60%) were still considered to be true, • 91 (19%) were considered to be obsolete, • and 98 (21%) were considered to be false. Poynard T, Munteanu M, Ratziu V, Benhamou Y, Di Martino V, Taieb J, Opolon P. Truth Survival in Clinical Research: An Evidence-Based Requiem? Annals of Internal Medicine 2002;136(12):888-895 / 27
One study: • The half-life of truth was 45 years. • the rate of loss of truth is 0.75% per year / 27 Platell C, Hall JC.Half-life of truth in surgical literature Lancet 1997; 350:1752
