What is an Okapi?? • An Okapi is giraffidartiodactyl mammal that lives in the Lturi Rainforest, found north east of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo. The Okapi looks like a zebra and a donkey mix, even though it is actually related to the giraffe because of their similarities. *Long blue tongue & lobed canine teeth. *skin covered horns or ossicones • *they walk at a pace. They simultaneously step with the front and hind leg on the same side of the body rather than moving alternate legs on either side like other ungulates. (Denverzoo.org)
Issue 1 POACHING • People are poaching the okapi for meat and its fur. • Regardless of the okapis status of living, Poachers will not stop hunting this animal until it is wiped out. ( more rare the animal is, it is worth more money)
Issue 2 Deforestation and loss of habitat • Deforestation is making there be less area for the okapi to live • Okapis usually live by themselves or with their babies (mom), they cant live with other okapis otherwise they will fight.
Endangerment and even extinction. The Okapis current status is threatened due to the issues it has to face. Who would want to kill this?????
Cut down less Rainforests Breed/keep in captivity until the population has risen Cutting down less of the Lturi Rainforest can help the Okapi because it will still have a place to live This might help the population of the Okapi increase.
What is the Okapi related to, and what family is it in (use the scientific name)
The okapi is directly related to the giraffe • Its scientific name of the group is “giraffidartiodactyl”, giraffid meaning giraffe relative, and artiodactyl meaning even-toed ungulate
Explain why poachers will not stop hunting a certain species until it is extinct.
My simple answer • the more rare the animal is = more money in their pockets.
Last question!!!!!!!!!!!!!! • Bonus: who was the okapi discovered by???
The Okapi was discovered in the deep forests of Belgian Congo by the explorer Henry Stanley.
