Objective is to create a critical mass of internationally recognised excellence in basic research • Supports basic research in strategic fields relevant to Ireland’s industrial development Science Foundation Ireland • Biotechnology • Information & Communications Technology • Supports researchers drawn from Ireland and globally to carry out their work in Ireland • Manages a fund of £560 (2000-2006)
Areas of FocusBiotechnology 1) Signal Transduction in Cellular Contexts 2) The Immune Process including Molecular Medicine 3) Functional Genomics also:Relevant Underlying Platform Technologies (e.g. DNA chip array technology, proteomics, bioinformatics and structural biology) Outstanding proposals in other areas will also be considered
Areas of FocusInformation & Communication Technologies 1) Software Reliability in Complex Software-Intensive Systems 2) Optical Transmission and Switching Technologies (including related Nanoscience) Outstanding proposals in other areas will also be considered
Current Call for Proposals: Principal Investigators • Established leaders with outstanding contribution to basic research, at international level • Proposed research programme must demonstrate potential for further major contributions to field • Funding for P. I. and team (up to 12 people) of up to €1.3m annually to a max. of €6.5m over 5 years • Funding covers salaries, equipment, consumables, travel, refurbishment and overhead contribution

Current Call for Proposals: SFI Fellows • Outstanding researchers at the early stage of their career • Funding for SFI Fellow and team of up to €325k annually to a max. of €1.6m over 5 years • Typical team includes SFI Fellow, post-doctoral/ post-graduate researchers and technical support • Funding covers salaries, equipment, consumables, travel, refurbishment and overhead contribution
Current Call for Proposals: SFI Fellows • Rolling call • Application must be endorsed by Research Body • Application accompanied by PhD supervisor review • Must nominate two further reviewers, including current Research Director. • Assessment by International peer review • Feedback
