What is a hurricane? • A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone or severe tropical storm that forms in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. • There are 3 Categories of a Hurricane: • Category 1- Floods, rainfall, little wind and rough seas. • Category 2- Floods, heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas. • Category 3- Floods, heavy rainfall, extremely strong winds and rough seas.
What to do before a hurricane? To prepare for a hurricane you should: Have an emergency kit and have an evacuation plan Be aware of your surroundings Know if your land is prone to flooding Examine the dams in your area to see if they are hazardous to your property Know where your community’s evacuation routes are, and how to find more elevated ground
What to do before a hurricane? Ensure that your property is secure by: Close and cover your windows. If you know a major hurricane is approaching you can board them up with wood Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage. Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more wind resistant. Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts. Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage. Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
What to do before a hurricane? Determine how and where to secure your boat. Install a generator for emergencies. If in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the 10th floor. Consider building a safe room. Hurricanes cause heavy rains that can cause extensive flood damage in coastal and inland areas. Everyone is at risk and should consider flood insurance protection. Flood insurance is the only way to financially protect your property or business from flood damage.

Hurricane sandy was a category 3 hurricane. Category 3 is a very dangerous level of hurricane that causes great damage. The Caribbean and the United States were affected by this hurricane.
