Kevin Quire Utah Education Network Utah Emulab Network Connectivity
Goals • Project kick off in June 09 • High speed, low latency connectivity for Utah Emulab to Internet2 for ProtoGENI • Ability to pass multiple VLANs directly from lab to Internet2 • Scalable bandwidth solution • I2 providing 10 Gig for the project • Prefer solution that bypasses campus network and firewall
Challenges • Emulab not directly connected to UEN or I2 • Lab is across campus from UEN Pop • Campus is eight miles from Internet2 Pop • UEN has existing L2 link used for I2/NLR connectivity • Campus Firewall • When does the campus firewall not cause issues for research? (Rulesets & performance) • No cost effective way to connect Emulab directly to Internet2 (more on this later)
Solution • We realized Emulab needed to bypass campus network and connect directly to UEN • Dark Fiber provisioned across campus • This solved layer 2 and firewall issues • New link connecting I2 and UEN • 10GE dedicated for GENI/Emulab • UEN connects the two with Dot1q tunnel • 2GB Rate Limit in place • July 2010 converting to MPLS L2VPN (AToM)
