Poet & Pilgrim’s Progress • Dante cries at sight of a mass of backward people with tears running down their bodies • Virgil admonishes Dante’s behavior, discusses sinners, blabs about the formation of his city’s name • Dante could care less about Mantua, they talk about more recent sinners, and Virgil rushes him along to the next bolgia

  3. The Sin… • Tried to see into the future • Sorcery (distortion of God’s law)

  4. Inhabitants • Amphiaraus (left war) • Tiresias (man/woman, blind prophet) • Aruns (?) • Manto (lady after which Virgil’s hometown was named)

  5. Torment… • Head screwed on backward • Always moving backward (in reference to vision) • Blinding Tears

  6. Theme Stuff • Punishment equivalent to sin • In life, they tried to move forward in time and see the future. In Hell, the sinners walk backward throughout eternity and are blinded. • Distortion of God’s law = Distortion of body in Hell
