What is a “Leader”? • Leadership is influencing people – by providing purpose, direction, and motivation – while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organisation. • Influencing getting people to do what you want • Purpose giving people a reason to do things • Direction communicating the way you want it done • Motivating making people want to give 100% • Operating taking actions to achieve the goals • Improving sustain strength & remove weaknesses
Leadership Responsibilities • Task • carrying out tasks or activities • meeting deadlines • achieving goals • Team • achieving organisational objectives • meeting performance standards • Individual • developing the capabilities of individuals
Leadership and Command • Command includes: • the authority and responsibility for • using available resources effectively • people • equipment • time • money • planning and organising, • directing, coordinating, and controlling, • health, safety and welfare, • morale and discipline.
Command Authority • Authority (power) comes from: • Legitimate Power: Granted by some authority • Coercive Power: The Stick / fear of punishment • Reward Power: The Carrot / offer of reward • Expert Power: Skills, experience, education • Referent Power: Admiration, respect • Alternatively … • Charisma: Personality, charm, grace
