Needs • Addition of automotive plants in the Southeast has exploded in the last two decades • Mercedes Benz • Honda • Hyundai • Toyota • Automotive plants have attracted over 200 automotive suppliers to Alabama alone • Created a dramatic shift in the regional waste handling needs • Types and quantity of waste • Transportation of waste

Objectives • Develop a Regional Recycling Center that: • Addresses the recycling needs of local automotive industries • Develops environmentally friendly processes that reduce automotive wastes, and produces resalable goods • Identifies and addresses environmental justice issues • Creates new jobs, preferably in economically disadvantaged areas

  4. Phase One Objectives • Identify core constituents and potential companies • Automotive Manufacturers • Automotive Suppliers • Recycling Companies • Identify types and quantities of materials to recycle • Steel • Plastics • Glass • Paint Sludge • Oil • Economic Feasibility Study

  5. Phase One Objectives • Identify existing technologies and companies that can handle recycling needs • Identify existing markets for recycled goods • Cast recycled steel • Paint sludge to sealants • Plant Location • Transportation and logistics issues • Workforce availability and job training • Economic and environmental impact • Identify new recycled goods and markets

  6. Partnership • Create a partnership between industry, university, and government • Coordinated research effort between college of engineering, college of business, local environmental firms, automotive manufacturers and suppliers, and recycling companies
