The Lizard- An Amazing Animal Lizards are unique animals- not only can they detach their tails and regenerate them, but the way that they are able to do this is even more interesting. A certain species of lizard also possesses another very unique quality- walking on water.
Tail Regeneration • Most species of lizards have the ability to detach their tails as a form of self-defense, to distract their predator and make a quick escape. • When lizards detach their tails, a clean stub is left behind, which the lizard then grows a completely identical new tail from.
Stem Cells used in Regeneration • The tail of a lizard is a fairly simple structure, so regeneration is not very complicated and can be done in a relatively short amount of time. • Lizards are born with a number of stem cells in the interior of their spine, which can be moved down the spine to the stub to provide the cells needed to make a new tail.
“Walking” on Water • One species of lizard, called the basilisk lizard, has the ability to walk on water. • It does this my moving its webbed feet at extremely high speeds, so it presses on the water and lifts off before the surface tension breaks.
Lizards are very interesting animals, and a lot can be learned from studying them. The way that they regenerate their tail can be used in future stem cell research, and the ability to walk on water could be used to make something that could move on water without breaking the surface.
