Networking Components VasilisAngelogiannos CECS 560 Assignment 3
Topics • Hub • Switch • Router • Bridge • Gateway • Firewall • Wireless AP
Hub • Low cost, low function device • Sends data from one computer to all other computers on the network • Operates at Layer 1 • Used to connect multiple twisted pair of fiver optic Ethernet devices together • Hubs are usually found in small business offices and home networks
Switch • More expensive than a hub • Operates at Layer 2 • Used for most LANs • Multiplayer switches operates at more than 1 OSI layer • Allows for dedicated bandwidth • Switches are used for larger businesses
Bridge • A device that filters data traffic • Network traffic is managed rather that rebroadcasted • Bridges analyze packets to determine if they are able to be sent the appropriate network segment • Used to reduce traffic on a LAN • Operate at Layer 2 • Used in smaller networks because complexity can lead to loops
Gateway • A network point that acts as an entrance to another network. • They join two networks that use different protocols • Can operate at any network layer • Support multiple protocols • Home routers can serve as gateways • Computers can be configured to serve as gateways
Firewall • Device designed to monitor network transmissions by allowing and blocking accessed according to a set of rules. • PCs include software based firewalls • Firewalls can perform basic routing functions • Recommended to be used in all networks
Wireless Access Point • Device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network • Usually connected to a router • Home networks usually have one • Businesses typically have several WAPs
