Introduction • THE WAR OF 1812 WAS THE SECOND MAJOR CLASH BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND BRITIAN IN NORTH AMERICA. ALTHOUGH NEITHER SIDE WON A CLEAR VICTORY, THE WAR GAVE AMERICANS A SENSE OF STRONG NATIONAL PRIDE!!!!
EFFORTS TOWARD PEACE REPUBLICAN JAMES MADISON WON PRESIDENCY IN 1808, WANTS TO AVOID WAR ASKED CONGRESS TO PASS NON-INTERCOURSE ACT = BANNED TRADE W/ BRITIAN AND FRANCE PLAN WAS TO PLAY BRITAIN AND FRANCE AGAINST EACH OTHER ACTUALLY WORKED, BUT TOO LATE!
THE WAR HAWKS-THE DECISION FOR WAR • MOST PEOPLE WHO VOTED FOR WAR CAME FROM SOUTH AND WEST • HURT DUE TO BRITISH TRADE RESTRICTIONS • WESTERN FARMERS ALSO BLAMED CONFLICT W/ NATIVE AMERICANS ON BRITISH • MANY BELIEVED WAR W/ BRITIAN WOULD HELP USA GAIN CANADA AND END NATIVE ATTACKS • ANGER OVER THE IMPRESSMENT OF SAILORS
LASTING EFFECTS OF WAR • FEDERALIST LOST POPULARITY, AND WOULD DISOLVE FOREVER • TREATY OF GHENT RESTORED PREWAR BOUNDARIES • WAR OF 1812 INCREASED US PRESITIGE OVERSEAS AND STARTED A WAVE OF PATRIOTISM AND UNITY • ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS!!!
