Nativist Reaction to Immigrants Objectives: At the end of this lesson: Students will analyze the nativist response to the influx of immigrants to the United States by examining primary sources, pictures, and cartoons Students will describe the effect of nativism on immigrants by synthesizing primary source data and creating a pamphlet attacking the immigrants or a journal entry written by an immigrant

  3. Announcements Submit Presidential Election Charts 1820, 1824, 1828, 1832 and/or 1820s Decade Chart Quiz on Thursday covering Ch. 13

  4. Warm-Up Why do immigrants come to the United States? What do immigrant experience when they enter a new country? Should the U.S. continue to allow immigrants into the country? Why/Why not?

  5. Motivation How and why did some Americans object to the arrival of new immigrants during the 1840s and 1850s?

  6. Mini-Lesson Identify the 2 major groups that immigrated to the United States in the 1840s/1850s. Explain the reasons each group decided to enter the U.S. Which reason(s) is a push factor/pull factor? Describe nativism and its impact on immigrants.

  7. Guided Practice Students will complete the introductory primary source by utilizing the document Analysis Chart

  8. Independent Practice Students will utilize a jigsaw to interpret the primary sources in 1 of 8 groups. Once you and your group have completed the analysis, your group will present their findings to the rest of the class.

  9. Assessment Students may work in their group to complete the assessment. Your group must choose 1 of the following options: a. Pamphlet: Create a tri-fold from a nativist organization detailing all of the reasons that they are against immigration and trying to persuade American citizens to support their cause b. Dialogue: Write a dialogue between 2 nativists arguing all of the reasons that immigration oughttto be restricted c. Speech: Create and perform a speech by a nativist politician outlining all of the problems with allowing immigration to continue

  10. Closing/Wrap Up What are the similarities and differences between the reception for modern immigrants versus the reception immigrants received according to the historical documents? What contributions have immigrant populations (then and now) made to the U.S?

  11. Lesson Extension Identify specific portions of the song “No Irish Need Apply” and determine how the Irish felt, why they came to America, and how their treatment may have been different than what they expected.
