Rock RipRap Structures~ VTC Technical Training WorkshopIntroduction Jon FrippNDCSMCFt. Worth, TX
Workshop Goal: The focus of this half day VTC workshop is on designing and constructing rock riprap structures. The target audience is NRCS engineers and technicians. The learning is through a combination of lecture and example calculations. Participants will be provided hand out materials in electronic form that they should print and reference prior to the workshop.
Module Topics • Issues with Hard Structures • Overview of Hard Stream Stabilization Structures • Sizing Rock • Filters Bedding and Geotextiles • Scour • Grade Control • Construction • Rock Sizing Software maybe
What will not be covered in this workshop but is also important • Geotechnical stability • Permits • Environmental Issues
Q: Why do we care? A:Erosion Nutrient cycling Habitat Natural Process Damage to Property Water Quality Issues Habitat
Rock Protection Aesthetics Habitat Security Stability
Flexibility in Projects Do we want a project that adjusts or one that is static? Aesthetics Habitat Protection of Property Stability
Geomorphic vs. Engineering Stability Engineering Stability – a river that is static in terms of position, section, slope and planform Geomorphic Stability – a river that maintain same general cross section dimensions while adjusting its position across the floodplain. Width depth, and slope adjust over time so there is no net aggradation or degradation. Synonymous with dynamic equilibrium Life/Property Issues Ecology Issues
Jig Saw Effect Be sure you understand the pieces before putting them together
Introductions • Introduce yourself • Describe your technical background • Describe the watershed that you are working in • Describe your projects • Describe what you hope to get out of this workshop
