  3. Mieprefecture is blessed with an excellent natural environment. The Shima Peninsula has a beautiful coastline, deeply indented.(Rias coastline) This area was registered as a national park in 1946. You can enjoy wonderful landscapes there. Mie University

  4. Mie, Nara and Wakayamaprefectures have “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, and the Cultural Landscape that Surround Them. On this July 1st, this place was registered as the World Heritage. Mie University

  5. Mie also produced Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of cultured pearls. He has made it possible for many women to ornament with pearls. Ise Jingu is one of the oldest shrines. It is full of a mythical atmosphere and solemn air. Mie University

  6. The great haiku poet Basho Matuso was born in Iga, Mie in the Edo Period. This year, in 2004 we celebrate the 360th anniversary of Basho’s birth. Haiku is Japanese original poem style expressing sense of seasons and feelings in short 17 letters. Mie University

  7. Mie has long been called “Umashi-kuni”,meaning both “land of Beauty” and “land of Delicious”.Mie offers a wide range of seafood and mountain –product specialities.   12. Faculty of Bioresources In October 1987, the Faculty of Bioresources was founded as a pioneer institution of higher education and research regarding all biological and environmental fields. In April 2000, our Faculty was reorganized into three departments: Department of Sustainable Resource Sciences, Department of Environmental Science and Technology, and Department of Life Science.  These departments collaborate in providing education and research on sustainable agriculture, forestry and fishery, basic lifescience, and regional and global ecosystems.  Mie University
