The Tattoo Removal Process • Lasers remove tattoo by delivering high levels of energy in short bursts to disrupt the tattoo pigment or pigmented lesions • The body’s natural immune system is triggered to eliminate the pigment. Big particles are hard to remove. Smaller particles can flow through the immune system. • The first lasers were CO2 Laser which caused the pigment to come off with the scab then Q-Switched laser were invented to deliver nano-second laser which took 12 to 18 months to remove tattoos safely • The latest technology released is the pico-second laser like the Syneron Candela’s Picoway Laser System which can remove tattoos within 4 to 6 months.
What if you took 10 times of the power that lights up Paris at night…… and focused it into a 5mm spot size? What would you get?
Photoacoustic vs. Photothermal Laser energy is delivered more slowly so that only larger pigment fragments will shatter. Laser energy is delivered so rapidly that even the smallest pigment fragments will shatter.

Picosecond vs. nanosecond Nanosecond: small particles Picosecond: miniscule particles
Comparison of PicoWay’s 450 ps Pulse vs. ATV’s 50 ns Pulse ATV – 50ns Untreated Control Sample PicoWay – 450ps
ATP-Acoustic Thermal Pressure index Picoway Picosure • ATP>1 means that most of the optical energy delivered to ink or pigment particles is delivered without heating (Photoacoustic effect) = Pure mechanical effect • ATP<1 means that most of the optical energy is delivered through heating (Photothermal effect) resulting in enhanced pain and side effects
Photoacoustic vs. Photothermal High peak power means greater efficacy and safety. The 450ps pulse of the PicoWay delivers 4.5 times more photoacoustic effect than the lower energy pulse of other picosecond lasers. The 750ps pulse of the other laser generates mostly thermal energy delivered over a longer period of time. The thermal energy is the main source of side effects and lower efficacy. Picoway Picosure PicoWay = Higher efficacy & less discomfort

PicoWay Multi-center Clinical Study on Tattoos • Clearance at the last session (Investigator assessment) • 89% of the subjects had at least 50% clearance • 54% of the subjects had at least 75% clearance • For patients who had at least 75% clearance, the clearance was achieved in an average of 3.9 treatments. • Discomfort • 62% of tattoo treatments were reported to have none to mild discomfort • Total treatment regime time • Based on average treatments and interval between treatments, mean entire treatment therapy may be 8-19 weeks.
