What is Saturday Scholars™? • The Saturday Scholars™ Program is a tutoring program primarily made up of individuals, who volunteer their time to help students having problems in classes, students who feel they could benefit from the one-on-one instruction tutoring provides, and students wanting to excel further in their studies. Parents, Grandparents, Relatives, High School Honor/gifted Students are welcome to participate as tutors. Please join us.. It takes a community to raise a child. • The program has received numerous awards including: • “Best of Texas” Award by the Corporate Fund for Children, proclamations in both the Texas Senate and House of Representatives, as well as by Governor George W. Bush …1994 • The founder of the Saturday Scholars Program, Mr. James Coleman was named a Texas “Governor’s 2000 Volunteer Award Winner … 2000 • Regional Winner of the JCPenney Golden Rule Award …1999 • Dallas County Outstanding Volunteer Award (Education)…1999 • “Swiss Army Equipped National Award” …1999 • Selected and profiled as “BEST IN CLASS” by the Texas Education Agency (TEA); distributed to all 7000 Texas Campuses by 9/2002. We are one way that the community can come together to assure that no child is left behind. • The Saturday Scholars™ program is available to students in the Arlington, Carrollton/Farmers Branch, Cedar Hill,Dallas, DeSoto, Irving, Grapevine/Colleyville, HEB, Keller, Lewisville, and Plano ISDs. • When is it available? • The program is available at Griffin Middle School on Saturdays during the school year. The sessions start promptly at 9:00 a.m. and end at 11:00 a.m. Sessions are held in the Library. Please see the back of this brochure for dates when tutoring sessions are available. • How can my child and/or I participate? • You or your child can sign up through the school office either for a one-time tutoring session or for the entire semester/year. Your Child can sign up as a Saturday Scholar and receive FREE tutoring!. • What is required from me? • Your continued encouragement of your child to participate in the program. • Transportation of your child to and from the school. • If your child knows you care about his/her progress, he/she will be encouraged to do better. • The Saturday Scholars™ Program is available to any student who needs extra study time to improve grades, has a special project to work on, or would like a quiet place to do homework/project assignment. • What can I do to maximize my child’s progress? • Get to know your child’s teacher. • Sit in on a Saturday Scholars™ session. • Keep the communication channels open between you and your child’s teacher. • Schedule meetings between you and your child’s teacher if you feel your child is not working up to his/her potential. • Encourage! Encourage! Encourage! • Who should I call/see if I have questions about my child’s participation in the program? • Please feel free to talk to their teacher or principal about your child’s specific needs, . We as tutors will maintain a close feedback mechanism with the school professionals.
