What is the OU program? OU is consistently chosen as one of US News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges. Additionally, OU was named the top teacher preparation institution by the Michigan Department of Education in 2007 and has been ranked exemplary every year since. Certification Track (18 months): 10-13 course option that will enable corps members to meet the requirements for the State of Michigan’s interim teaching certification. Certification + MAT Track (24 months): Corps members may choose to complete 2 additional courses to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in addition to meeting the requirements for the State of Michigan’s interim teaching certification. Corps members pursuing this track will be eligible for professional teaching certification. For either track, students will need to complete a third year of teaching. Corps members interested in professional certification will also need to complete a 3 credit reading course.

Program outline: MatseK-12 Foreign LanguageOakland University Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)Experimental Secondary Education Program for TFASchedule and SequenceEffective Fall 2013Sequencing of courses is subject to minor changes depending on instructor availability. *Elementary assignments will substitute TD 521 for TD 522 and TD 530 will be taken with the elementary cohort. Five credits of internship seminar is effective beginning with the 2013-2014 cohort and future cohorts.
Locations • Classes will be held in locations centrally located within Detroit • Most courses will be held at the Riverview Institute, 7733 East Jefferson Avenue, Detroit • Locations chosen will have parking, security, good classroom space, vending machines and other amenities of value to the adult learner
Class days & times • Cohorts will attend courses two days per week • Courses will typically run from 5:30pm-8:30pm • Classes will be offered as hybrid or online where possible
Oakland University Mentors • Oakland University Mentors will work with each TFA corps member throughout their classroom experience • Mentors will meet with corps members and observe them in their classroom • Mentors will be educators with urban teaching experience, providing a valuable resource of knowledge
Interim Certification (90 Day Letter) • Oakland University will provide your interim certification after all required documentation has been received • Complete application • Official transcript(s) • Blood borne pathogens certificate (copy will be provided by TFA) • CPR certificate (copy will be provided by TFA)
