Agency Report, WGISS #22 September 15, 2006 Lyndon R. Oleson U.S. Geological Survey Center for Earth Observations and Science (EROS) Sioux Falls, SD
Current status • Landsat 5 • Fixed array operations being implemented, reducing power availability • International acquisitions continuing to be supported • Attempting to acquire as much as possible • Landsat 7 • Scan Line Corrector (SLC) remains off • Gap-filled data increasingly popular • Geometric accuracy within 1 pixel (~15m)

Accessibility • Earth Explorer http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov • Global Visualization Viewer http://glovis.usgs.gov • Web Mapping Services http://gisdata.usgs.net
“Web-enabled” Landsat data • Direct web download plans • US only – includes Alaska and Hawaii • L7 ETM+ SLC-off only • Near real-time for newly acquired data • Archive: 2003 to present • Data specs: < 10% cloud cover, 9 quality • Release: February 2007, pending policy updates • Serves as pilot for possibly similar Landsat 8 product access
“Real-time” Acquisition Viewing • USGS has been beta testing an acquisition viewing capability • Recently, the Image Acquisition Viewer 1.0 (Kiosk mode) has been released to selected locations • Soon to be released to public via the internet
Future of Landsat • The Administration has directed NASA and the USGS to team up on development, launch, and operation of a free-flyer “Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM)” • NASA will procure an on-orbit data acquisition capability • USGS to operate and ingest, archive, process, and distribute Landsat-continuity data products. • Visit the LDCM Documents page at http://ldcm.usgs.gov/documents.php
Future of Land Imaging • The White House has initiated a year-long study called The Future of Land Imaging • To explore options for United States operational use of satellites to better serve society. • The USGS serves on the leadership team of this Federal interagency working group. • For more information visit http://www.landimaging.gov
Other Product News • Free Orthorectified Landsat data is now available for download from the Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis) at http://glovis.usgs.gov and Earth Explorer at http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov • Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C (SIR-C) previously-Processed Precision Data now available for downloading at no charge through Earth Explorer at http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov • Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer Sensor (AVHRR) 7 and 14 Day Greenness Composite Maps now available for download at no charge from the Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis) at http://glovis.usgs.gov and Earth Explorer at http://earthexplorer.usgs.gov
Grid Data Node Experiments • Recently hosted a visit by representatives of the Geophysical Network (GEON) grid user community to explore possibilities for collaboration • GEON is an NSF-funded grid network hosted and technically supported by SDSC • We are exploring scenarios for experimenting with different access methods with different data products such as: • USGS LiDAR point cloud data • National Elevation Dataset (NED) DEMs • Landsat data • Our goal to learn how to implement operational data node relationships with various grid communities. • Will share initial lessons-learned at WGISS #23.
