Procedural Issues Related to the Track System • Undifferentiated appointment • Faculty members who are unsure of which track to enter can be appointed at the level of Assistant Professor on an undifferentiated track for up to 3 yrs • Assistant professors can switch tracks but this should be done no less than 3 years prior to the end of their probationary period • Probationary period for tenure on the Investigator track is 9 yrs

Promotion and Tenure on the Investigator Track • Associate Professor (pages 7-9, 11-12) • Generally requires 6 yrs in the rank of assistant professor • Publish innovative, original research in peer-reviewed journals as first or last author • Successful in obtaining external funding to support research • Evidence of excellence in research training and professional education • Continued participation in clinical programs of the Medical School (for those on physician scientist path) • Service contributions to the school or University • Evidence of significant external recognition • Professor (pages 8-9, 11-12) • Generally 5 yrs in rank of associate professor with record of outstanding performance • Continue to publish innovative, original research in peer-reviewed journals as first or last author • Continued external funding • Record of effective research training, mentoring and professional education • Continued participation in clinical programs of the Medical School (for those on physician scientist path) • Scholarly leadership in research and education • Service contributions to the school or University • Evidence of highest forms of external recognition

Promotion on the Clinician EducatorTrack • Associate Professor (pages 9, 12-15) • A minimum of six years at the assistant professor level, except in unusual circumstances • Sustained pattern of excellence and impact in two promotable categories that has resulted in significant regional recognition of achievements • Professor (page 9-10, 12-15) • Anticipate a minimum of five years at the associate professor level, except in unusual circumstances • Multiple contributions in two promotable areas with a substantial impact in the field that have resulted in national/international recognition of achievements

What is External Professional Recognition • Prizes and Awards • Elected to scientific or professional societies and organizations • Invited to serve as a visiting or endowed professor • Selected to plan or lead symposia, conferences or professional society programs • Appointed to scientific or medical peer-review bodies (e.g., study sections) • Appointed to scientific, medical or government advisory or regulatory bodies • Appointed or elected to membership on governing councils or as an officer of scientific, government or professional organizations • Appointed to editorial boards or as editor • Invited to deliver talks at national meetings or other institutions

Promotion and Tenure Process for Tenure Track Faculty FAO request letters from outside referees (those suggested by candidate and ad hoc committee) FAO creates an ad hoc committee to review the promotion Departmental APT committees consider and put forth nominees Candidate provides names of 4-5 outside referees to evaluate the promotion and/or award of tenure Ad hoc committee reviews the candidates package and outside letters of reference and prepares a draft recommendation for approval or disapproval of promotion and/or tenure In cases of disapproval or outside letters with negative comments which could adversely affect the decision of the FSM APT committee, the draft recommendation is referred to the department chair for a response to the ad hoc committee Ad hoc committee prepares a final recommendation for approval or disapproval of promotion and/or tenure FSM APT committee reviews candidate’s package, outside letters, and ad hoc committee’s recommendation letter and makes decision to recommend or disapprove promotion and/or tenure FSM’s decision is reviewed and approved or not by the Provost FSM APT committee’s decision is reviewed and endorsed or not by the Dean

Promotion to Associate Professor on the Clinical Scholar Track Departmental APT committees consider and put forth nominees Candidate and department request outside letters FSM APT committee’s decision is reviewed and endorsed or not by the Dean FSM APT committee reviews candidate’s package and outside letters and makes decision to recommend or disapprove promotion FSM’s decision is reviewed and approved or not by the Provost

Promotion to Professor on the Clinician Educator Track Departmental APT committees consider and put forth nominees Candidate and department request outside letters FAO solicits letters from external referees FSM APT committee’s decision is reviewed and endorsed or not by the Dean FSM APT committee reviews candidate’s package and outside letters and makes decision to recommend or disapprove promotion FSM’s decision is reviewed and approved or not by the Provost

Promotion to Associate Professor on the Research Track • See pages 10 and 15 in the Information Guide • Typically have to be at least 5-6 yrs in rank of Research Assistant Professor • Record of outstanding collaborative and/or independent scientific work • Publish in peer-reviewed journals (some as first author) • Obtain external research funding as PI or co-I • Patents and licenses • Coherent body of research accomplishments • External professional recognition • Election to membership in scientific societies • Awards, invited lectures, and participation in symposia at scientific meetings • Leadership role in local or regional scientific meetings • For research faculty engaged in research support, the extent to which these activities contribute to research excellence within the medical school shall be considered, especially the establishment of new research support facilities of demonstrated excellence

Promotion to Professor on the Research Track • See pages 10 and 15 in the Information Guide • In rank as Associate Professor for at least 5 years • Record of excellence in independent and original research • Publish innovative, original research in peer-reviewed journals (some as first or senior author) as well as reviews and chapters • Generally have obtained external research funding as PI • Patents and licenses • External professional recognition • Membership on editorial boards, study sections, and/or advisory groups • Named lectureships and awards or participation in national and international symposia, courses, or teaching programs • Leadership roles in regional or national professional scientific organizations • membership in prestigious societies, participation in major society committees and programs, formal awards and major invited lectures • For research faculty engaged in research support, the extent to which these activities contribute to research excellence and the recognition the research faculty member has attained at the regional, national and international level shall be considered.  Contributions to excellence in research may be evidenced by the following: • By establishing new research support activities of demonstrated excellence that enhance the research capabilities and excellence of the University • By receiving letters from investigators at NU or other institutions, from administrative officials at NU or from authorities outside NU attesting to the contributions made by the faculty member toward progress in the research programs of individual investigators or to research excellence  at NU in general
