NIV 10 WORDS TO LIVE BY 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37-39
The SummaryOf It All, Pt. 2Matthew 22:37-39 “…Love your neighbor as yourself..” vs. 39b
1. The DIFFERENCE Between The Two Commandments Matthew 22:38 This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it… “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26,27 The gulf between the greatest and second greatest commands is huge. Note Well: They do not contradict and everything in the second is to be followed.
2. The DIMENSIONS Of The Second Commandment Matthew 22:39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
A. It Is About A Command Love your neighbor as yourself. “This is a command you will obey.” “My will is such thatin whatever direction I send you,I will not stop requiring it.”
B. It is About Neighbors Love your NEIGHBOR as yourself. People that are geographically or emotionally near you. The people God puts in our lives.
C. It Is About UnconditionalLove (Agape) LOVE your neighbor as yourself. SATISFACTION: Do I care about what they actually need? SECURITY: Do I care about their work, protection, safety and justice? DEVELOPMENT: Do I care about their growth, maturity and reaching their God given goals?
D. It Is About PersonalSpiritual Hygiene Love your neighbor AS YOURSELF. 1. Is my inner life ready for mutual love? 2. Am I available to offer – through me – His love to others? 3. Do I have inner personal acceptance issues, appetite issues or abuse issues that distract me from the command?
3. The Decision About The Second Commandment A. Making the choice: “I will love as He loves” B. Realizing the importance of prayer: “I know I cannot do this without His help.” C. Receiving the grace from God: “I will fill up daily with the grace to love my neighbor.”
