History Cesis is one of the oldest towns (1206) celebrated its 800 th anniversary in 2006
History • Historically Cesis is famous for: • being a member of the Hanseatic Union, • the cradle of the Latvian national flag – the second oldest flag in Europe • the residence of the Livonian Order of Brother of the Sword
Government Structure Local government in Latvia is organized on two levels- town or rural municipality and regional authority level Cesis region is governed by 24 chairmen who are elected by constituents of the towns and rural communities Cesis – 11 city council members, Mayor,Vice-Mayor is elected by the council members
Principal functions of the Cesis District Council • Regional development (territorial and spatial planning, long-range development plans and strategies) • Disaster management/civil defence • Public transportation • Continuing education of the pedagogical employees • Basic health care the region`s inhabitants, social care
Cesis District Council is responsible for the Cesis Adult education Centre, Regional Hospital, Health centre( Polyclinic), regional homes for the elderly and orphans
Overview of Economics • More than 5000 registered companies in the region • The region is benefiting from the successful development of the following various industries: • Timber industry – more than 60 companies with significant export capacity • Furniture industry. Mostly small companies that manufacture specialty furniture products made from natural birch, oak, pine trees
Overview of economics • Brick and tile industry – Lode is the only company in Latvia that produce solid bricks and ceramic roof tiles • Printing industry – Jāņa sēta is one of the largest printing companies in the Baltics • Construction industry – the region has a several strong ( and many smaller) construction companies
Overview of economics • Food producing – dominate milk , meat and bread factories ( additionally fish production, vegetable canning etc) • 2 breweries with strong position in the Latvian beer market - Cesu alus and Piebalgas alus Cesu alus is well known from the 16 th century Despite the many and varied industries the region is dominated by the service and retail industries ( 5-20 employees) Rate of unemployment 3,8-4%
Agriculture Agriculture continues to be a strong factor in the regions economy - employs 15-20% of the region`s population. The main crops: winter wheat and rye,summer wheat, barley ,oats and potatoes. Two significant scientific agricultural establishments Priekuļi plant breading station, the National machinery testing and certification centre
