A displacement reaction is where one reactive metal can kick out the less reactive metal

Often this energy is in the form of heat
Exothermic reaction - energy is given out (temperature increases)
Endothermic reaction - energy is taken in (temperature decreases)
Exothermic - e.g. combustion of fuel (heat given out by the chemicals to the surroundings)
Endothermic - e.g. ice cube melting in your hand (heat taken away from the surroundings to the chemicals (which is why your hand feels cold when you hold an ice cube and it melts))
5. Experiment You need to carry out the displacement reactions on the sheet
You need to record the original temperature, followed by the temperature change after two minutes has passed
1 Fill a boiling tube half up with copper sulphate
2 Record its temperature
3 Add a piece of the metal to it
4 Wait two minutes, then record the new temperature
6. Reactivity Series Hopefully you found the greatest temperature rise was from adding the magnesium to the copper sulphate
This was the most exothermic reaction - a great deal of heat was released - why was this?
This is because the magnesium is the most reactive metal we used, and so the reaction between the magnesium and copper sulphate was the strongest - a great deal of energy was released when the magnesium displaced the copper, forming the magnesium sulphate
